I
really liked Almost Famous when it first came out. I bet I
was more than just a little enthralled by the ohmigosh socute Kate
Hudson and the happy tale of the young lad taken aboard a magic bus
ride of groupies and rock stars and crazy people and Phillip Seymour
Hoffman playing Lester "F'n" Bangs, Rock Critic. And I thought
it was a perfectly good outrage that such a well-made film was nearly
ignored at the Academy Awards (sure, it won Best Original Screenplay
but Frances McDormand deserved a win, and honestly the film should've
been nominated for Best Feature instead of the Miramax Flavor of the
Month.) Luckily for me I had an outlet for my media-based gripes at
the time, wouldn't you say? Ho ho ho! You can taste the serendipity
in the air!
I
was slightly less enthralled when I later learned it was slightly
based on the true experiences Cameron Crowe had as a teenage writer,
and the film was more than likely his touching loving ode to, well,
himself. It's still an interesting story, I'll give you that, and
it's a well-made film, and Kate Hudson is still ohmigosh pinchyercheeks
cute, but you tend to see the heavy tarnish when you realize the ego
that it's ultimately serving.
And
then I saw Vanilla Sky and thought it was complete and utter
garbage and so Cameron Crowe fell out of my Wicked Cool Directors
list. But he's still one of the better ones, that much I know. I still
like Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Say Anything,
at least.
Well,
that's all the time we have this week for Rob Goes To The Movies
so until next time, this is Rob saying quit kicking the back of
my chair in time to the music, you uncultured yardape you.
