We
seem to have used the phrase "reality television" so much
now that it's lost all meaning. Reality isn't about teams of people
jumping through hoops to get a million dollars, or hanging out seeing
which member of a couple will cheat on the other member first. The
unscripted reactions of the participants may be real, sure, but their
situations are so contrived even a schlock sitcom writer has room
to criticize.
And
to Mark Burnett's credit, his Eco-Challenge series is always fun to
watch. But anyone thinking that any of these "reality"
shows gives us a view of how it is 100% accurate and true ought to
have their head examined. Away from the camera, I mean.
This
strip was the last regular Catatonic Comix strip I did. I was out
of work and bumming around on unemployment checks and just didn't
feel like taking time out every week to make a funny joke was fun
anymore, and that violated one of my fundamental rules of Doing This.
But I wasn't ready to hang up the hat just yet, instead much preferring
to keep things in a creative limbo, ready to take the torch back whenever
I wanted. But then that whole September 11 thing came around and honestly,
I didn't want to make fun of any of it, and then I got bogged down
in serious real-life troubles that I didn't feel like I could make
fun of and still remain as impersonal as possible with regards to
the strip content, and then...
